Visas for International Students

International Student Visa Requirements

Choosing to study in Australia can be one of the most life-changing and fulfilling decisions you make. The country offers an incredible lifestyle — from breathtaking beaches and stunning natural landscapes to unique wildlife, wide-open spaces, and a clean, welcoming environment.

Australia is home to some of the world’s leading universities, supported by a globally respected education system that attracts students from all corners of the world.

Typically, the Australian academic calendar is divided into two main semesters — the first running from March to July and the second from August to December, with summer holidays from December to February.

Tuition fees can differ between institutions, so it’s worth comparing options if budget plays a role in your decision. Understanding the education system can feel overwhelming at first, as each state operates its own framework and application process. Eligibility criteria, course offerings, and admission procedures can also differ between universities. At MD Immigration Services, we guide you through every stage — from course selection to understanding requirements, industry trends, and the benefits of each pathway.

Our team provides comprehensive assistance for student visa applications. We ensure your application presents a strong case for approval by demonstrating that you’re a genuine student with genuine intentions to study temporarily in Australia. We also review your immigration background, ensure all dependents are correctly included (to avoid future issues), and verify that all visa conditions — including financial capacity — are properly met.

When you apply through MD Immigration Services, we:

  1. Assess your eligibility for a post-study graduate visa (if applicable)

  2. Assist you in preparing your Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement — a key element of every student visa application

  3. Provide tailored advice on gathering supporting documents for your GTE statement

  4. Conduct a detailed review of your student visa eligibility and evidence requirements

  5. Offer guidance on bridging visas and work conditions for onshore applicants

  6. Prepare and lodge your complete application within the required timeframe

  7. Communicate directly with the Department of Home Affairs on your behalf

Genuine Temporary Entrant Requirement

To qualify for a student visa, the Department of Home Affairs must be convinced that you intend to live in Australia only for the duration of your studies and not on a permanent basis.

When assessing your application, the case officer will look at several factors, including:

  1. Your personal situation and ties to your home country

  2. Reasons or motivations for returning home after your studies

  3. How your chosen course aligns with your future goals and career plans

  4. Your past visa and immigration history

  5. Your education and employment background

  6. Any other relevant circumstances that may influence your intentions

At MD Immigration Services, we help you present a clear and convincing Genuine Temporary Entrant statement that strengthens your visa application.

Financial Requirements

You must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover your tuition fees, travel costs, and living expenses — not only for yourself but also for any accompanying family members — throughout your stay in Australia.

The amount of funds and type of evidence required depend on your nationality and the education provider you choose. A financial assessment framework determines whether you fall under the streamlined or regular processing category. This classification is based on your passport country and the institution’s risk rating. Depending on this, you may need to submit proof of English proficiency and detailed financial documents when lodging your application.

Our team at MD Immigration Services will guide you through this process, helping you prepare accurate and compliant financial evidence to meet all visa criteria.

Student Visa Work Rights

You can begin working only after your course has commenced.

Once studies begin, you and your eligible family members are permitted to work up to 40 hours per fortnight while the course is in session. During official study breaks or semester holidays, there are no limits on the number of hours you can work.

A fortnight runs from Monday to the second following Sunday.

Students enrolled in a Master’s by Research or Doctoral degree program may work unlimited hours once their course has started. Their family members are also entitled to work without hour restrictions once the course is underway.

The Department considers your course to be “in session” if:

  1. It falls within the published semester period (including exam time)

  2. You have completed your studies but your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) remains valid

  3. You are completing an additional course during a break that contributes credits toward your main course

Important Conditions for Student Visa Holders

Course Enrolment, Attendance, and Academic Progress

As a student visa holder, you must stay enrolled in a program that is officially listed on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).

You are also required to maintain the level of attendance specified by your education provider and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress throughout each study term.

If you fail to meet these standards, your education provider is obligated to notify the Department of Home Affairs. Each institution sets its own benchmarks for what counts as satisfactory attendance and academic achievement.

Why Choose Australia Over Canada

Studying in Australia offers many advantages over Canada. The country is renowned for its high living standards, vibrant culture, and comparatively lower tuition and living expenses than countries like the United States. Australia is also known for its safety—police officers typically do not carry firearms, reflecting a low crime rate.

Students can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and 40 hours per week during holidays, providing extra income and valuable experience. With world-class education, a safe and friendly environment, and opportunities for global exploration, Australia is an excellent choice for international students.

To apply for a student visa, applicants need to meet general requirements and submit proof of eligibility. Documents required include recent passport photos, academic transcripts, evidence of visa fee payment, English test results such as IELTS, TOEFL, or PTE, and an acceptance letter from a top-ranked Australian university.
